If anyone here are having thoughts of visiting Sabah, make sure you put ‘Tanjung Simpang Mengayau’ in your list. This is one spot you have got to check out. It is the Northern most point of Borneo. If you ever seen a Sabah map, (Sabah is part of Malaysia) you will notice that the map somewhat looks like a dog to some. So it’s the pointy ear part of it.
It’s a heavenly place where the beaches are still very much unspoilt. Sandy white/yellow beach with swimming-friendly waves makes this place a must for anyone visiting Kudat. I remember how my cousins and uncles used to tell me how hard it was to get to this place. There were no proper roads here. You can even still do some hunting as the forest and bushes were still thick then. They also told me that they also found some old coins along the shores and near the coral reefs as well.
Tanjung Simpang Mengayau is just around 30-45 minutes drive from the Kudat town. Of course since our village or ‘kampung’ is in this place called Kampung Popot, it takes just about 15-20 minutes depending on what vehicle you use to get there. (four wheel drive recommended)
I do have photo’s of it but too much of it is blocked by well, me! There’s another option though. Go to Dr Izad’s post here. His snapshots did more justice to this place compared to mine.
We do have a steady stream of visitors to this place already and something need to be done to make sure that the natural beauty of this place is preserved as long as it takes. Welcome to Sabah!

Unfortunately, the development of the place have been politicize…the road there from the beginning of Tg. Simpang Mengayau never been upgraded…it is very sad to see that much publicized place do not have the adequate infrastructure along side…but other than that, I’m proud of Tg. Simpang Mengayau which carries the story of the Rungus people fighting with pirates…Simpang Mengayau simply means tempat pertempuran (potong sana, potong sini) guna parang real tau…

Aryst- Having a road that is not upgraded actually added to the fun of getting there. After a ‘careful’ ride on a small car, imagine taking that corner and lo and behold, the majestic beautiful beach with rolling waves greeting you. The first time I saw it I went, is this real? It looks just like those beaches I saw on Channel 11, Discovery Travel and Living..

Kay, somehow I agree with you…for me, ‘gravel’ road (panggilan org kampung) like that is a normal road because I grew up using a road like that but I now the development of Kg. Tiga Papan road, the governmwnt should already upgraded it a lon time ago…they have started the graded road since I’m in secondary school but till now, nothing had been done to upgraded it…biasalah politik, kalau mo sokongan rakyat baru buat yg baru dan cantik…slps menang, hidung pun tak nampak…that’s just my opinion…sori Kay, kalau terkeluar tajuk sekejap…you need to do more post about beautiful places..

The place was not known when I was working in Kota Marudu in the 70s. 10 – 15 Mei, I will be visiting Kudat again for an official duty and one of my priorities is to step foot on Tanjung Mengayau.
Are you a local Kudatans? If so please help me to get some hotel phone number in Kudat.
